Justin Cooke Contemporary artist

Justin Cooke is an artist whose paintings sit within a tradition of British artists inspired by landscape in all its forms. Much like the best artists in this field, both contemporary and throughout history, Justin has developed an affinity with the landscape he knows well, and, working on the cusp of what is abstract and what is figurative, he reveals this relationship through a true understanding of his subject. Born in 1966, he studied at Newcastle University . After graduating in 1988 he began to work solely as an artist and continues to do so. He lives in Dorset with his family.

FIELD, SUMMER GRASSES, 2007

In his paintings, his use of mixed media lends itself perfectly to the development of this subject as the paintings reveal themselves through a process of built up and scraped away layers. This often leads to a result which could be considered in almost abstract terms. However it is his painterly technique, his use of the brush, an individual thing that can only be honed from years of experience which makes his work distinctive and recognisable.

Dorset is a constant source of inspiration for me. It is a landscape that I have known well since childhood and no part of it more so than the South Dorset Ridgeway and its coast. It has a unique sense of place that I have always had an affinity with”.
